  1. 1. What limits the luminosity of red supergiants?

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astrofysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Författare :Eric Svensson; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Stellar evolution; Red supergiants; Red giants; Luminosity; Binary stars; Binary star systems; Binary star interactions; Binary stellar evolution; Humphreys-Davidson limit; Upper luminosity limit; BSE; Population synthesis; Simulations; M31; LMC; SMC; Metallicity; Mass transfer; Merging; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : The observed upper limit of the luminosity of red supergiants, often called the Humphreys-Davidson limit, has recently been shown to be independent of metallicity and to not be explainable by single star evolution – findings that both contradict established ideas of the origins of the limit. It is now known that the vast majority of stars with sufficient mass to possibly evolve into red supergiants above the limit interact with companion stars at some point during their lives. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Can Dwarf Galaxies Tell Us How the Milky Way Formed?

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astrofysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Författare :Þóra Karlsdóttir; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Dwarf Galaxy; Milky Way; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : Dwarf galaxies are a key component in understanding the evolution of galaxies and provide tests on the standard cosmological $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter model. According to the formation hierarchy, dwarf galaxies are the pieces that create all galaxies. Our current understanding of dwarf galaxies faces discrepancies between theory and observations. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Planes of satellite galaxies

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation

    Författare :Jessica Laura Erika Kocher; [2022]
    Nyckelord :Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : The Planes of Satellites Problem is an open question within the field of galaxy formation. It is based on the observations that the Milky Way's satellites, as well as those around the Andromeda (M31) galaxy, align in planes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. A Close Look at the Transient Sky in a Neighbouring Galaxy

    Master-uppsats, Luleå tekniska universitet/Rymdteknik

    Författare :Kiran Tikare; [2020]
    Nyckelord :Astrophysical Transients; Optical Transients; Microlensing; Variable Stars; Andromeda Galaxy; Forced Aperture Photometry; Time Domain Astronomy; Sky Survey; Zwicky Transient Facility; Machine Learning; Big Data Science;

    Sammanfattning : Study of the time variable sources and phenomena in Astrophysics provides us with important insights into the stellar evolution, galactic evolution, stellar population studies and cosmological studies such as number density of dark massive objects. Study of these sources and phenomena forms the basis of Time Domain surveys, where the telescopes while scanning the sky regularly for a period of time provides us with positional and temporal data of various Astrophysical sources and phenomena happening in the Universe. 5. 5. Can tidal interactions produce MGC1?

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; Lunds universitet/Institutionen för astronomi och teoretisk fysik - Genomgår omorganisation

    Författare :Eric Andersson; [2018]
    Nyckelord :globular cluster; MGC1; Andromeda; M31; galaxy; dwarf galaxy; tidal interactions; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : The globular cluster population of large spiral galaxies can be divided into two populations: one population which formed in-situ and one which has been assembled through capture of clusters that have been tidally stripped away from other galaxies during close encounters or mergers. In this work, I focus on the globular cluster MGC1, which is orbiting the M31 galaxy. LÄS MER
