  1. 1. Increased carbon sequestration of actively restored tropical forests in Sabah, Malaysia : a comparison of natural regeneration and active restoration

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and Management

    Författare :Johan Engström; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Degraded tropical forest; Active restoration; Carbon sequestration; Natural regeneration; Enrichment planting; Biomass accumulation;

    Sammanfattning : As restoration with assisted natural regeneration and enrichment planting becomes a more important and popular method to restore ecosystem services and mitigate negative climate effects, these treatments and their effectiveness is heavily debated. There are three main groups of opinions regarding restoration, one is that humans actively need to help nature recover and the second is that nature itself does a better job without our help and the third is somewhere in between. 2. 2. Analysis of simulated functional diversity in tropical forests: Differences between cultivated and naturally grown secondary forests in Cambodia

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Författare :Clarissa Graf; [2023]
    Nyckelord :physical geography; ecosystem analysis; functional diversity; plant functional traits; ecosystem modelling; secondary forest ecosystems; sustainable forest management; LPJ-GUESS; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Accelerated deforestation represents a major global environmental concern. Over the last decades Cambodia has experienced a drastic decrease in forest cover and measures to halt deforestation have not been as effective as planned. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Advancing understanding of tropical forest carbon dynamics through improved allometric models for palms: A case study with Prestoea montana in Puerto

    Magister-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Växtekologi och evolution; Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för biologisk grundutbildning

    Författare :Paschalis Chatzopoulos; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Above ground biomass; allometry; Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot; Palms;

    Sammanfattning : Tropical forests are major components of Earth’s carbon stocks, but their diversity and structural complexity pose major challenges for making accurate estimates of their above ground biomass (AGB). Palms, in particular, are prominent and unique components of many tropical forests that have anatomical and physiological differences from dicot trees which affect their height - diameter allometry and consequently, our ability to accurately estimate their AGB. 4. 4. A detailed study on Amazon Forest structure and mortality rates through LPJ-GUESS vegetation model

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Författare :Sara Mazzuoli; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Amazon s Forest; LPJ-GUESS; simulation; TEAM-NETWORK; dynamic vegetation model; observation; mortality; allometry; tree stand structure; biomass; cohort; PFTs; plant functional types; NPP; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Nowadays it has become relevant for scientists to understand the impact of tropical forest structure on the Global Carbon Cycle. Dynamic vegetation models have been developed to pursue this issue, specifically by improving algorithms that could analyze the allometry, biomass content and mortality rate of each singular simulated plant individual and how this responds to climate change, management and rising CO2 concentrations. 5. 5. Evaluating the ability of LPJ-GUESS to simulate the tree size structures of tropical forests

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Författare :Margot Jeanne Knapen; [2021]
    Nyckelord :tropical forests; tree size distributions; LPJ-GUESS; carbon; biomass; sensitivity analysis; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Tropical forests are of great importance to all living-beings due to their high biodiversity and the valu-able resources, such as food and fuel, they provide. In addition, tropical trees sequester a high amount of carbon and consequently over half of the global forest carbon stock can be found in the tropics. LÄS MER
