1. Galli Non Grata in Mali? Explaining why France left Mali in August 2022
Master-uppsats, FörsvarshögskolanSammanfattning : Based on the understanding that Mali and Russia will be unable to contain the jihadist security threat in Mali, this paper explains why France withdrew from Mali in 2022 and why the latter intensified its cooperation with Russia. Existing literature points to operational obstacles and grievances directed towards France’s presence in Mali, however, it falls short of explaining whether these are explanatory for France’s withdrawal, or why France wouldn’t have left earlier considering these hurdles. By grounding Grände as part of the left-wing radicalization process that was prominent in Sweden, in the third world, but also in large parts of the industrialized Western World, during the 1960’s and early 1970’s, an agent and structure model is used to examine how an aid worker, the son of a Swedish priest, ended up as a guerilla fighter in Northern Argentina, who was killed in battle in 1975.
