  1. 1. Feeding Live or Dried Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens) to laying hens – Effects on Immune Traits, Egg Quality, Feather Condition, Body and Organ Weights

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Författare :Adnan Aslam; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Black soldier fly; live larvae; dried larvae; immune response; egg quality; body weight; feather condition scoring;

    Sammanfattning : Due to increasing prices and potential scarcity of soybean meal (SBM), there is growing demand for alternative and sustainable protein sources in poultry production. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have proven to be a suitable alternative based on nutritional value and sustainable production. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Providing live black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae to laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) using three different methods : effects on foraging behaviour and production parameters

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Författare :Ronja Lindell; [2021]
    Nyckelord :laying hens; black soldier fly larvae; environmental enrichment; foraging; feather pecking;

    Sammanfattning : Feather pecking is a major welfare issue in commercial egg production. Feather pecking is thought to be a form of re-directed foraging pecking behaviour. When hens are deprived of the necessary conditions to perform foraging behaviour the risk of developing feather pecking increases. LÄS MER

  3. 3. To be a chick mother : variation in maternal care and its effect on chick behavioural development

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Författare :Linnéa Christenson; [2021]
    Nyckelord :maternal behaviour; natural broodiness; induced broodiness; social ranking; hen chick interaction; chick behavioural development; poultry; layers; feather peck;

    Sammanfattning : In Swedish poultry production today over 7 million chicks are incubated, housed and reared without maternal care. Studies indicate that chicks behavioural development and welfare may benefit from hen maternal care and potentially maternal care could be artificially provided in the commercial situation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Spatial resolution threshold in layers and red jungle fowls : are there differences due to light intensity or light spectra?

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Environment and Health

    Författare :Pauline Annerstedt; [2018]
    Nyckelord :spatial resolution threshold; layer; red jungle fowls; visual acuity;

    Sammanfattning : The domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus) originates from the forests in South-east Asia. It may be correct to assume that the visual system of the domestic fowl is still adapted to light that is filtered through the green forest canopy. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Optimal light spectrum to laying hens

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Environment and Health

    Författare :Rosan De Groot; [2018]
    Nyckelord :laying hen; behavior; light; spectrum; preference;

    Sammanfattning : Modern poultry farming still struggles with high levels of feather pecking in laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus). This form of abnormal pecking behavior is known to be affected by multiple factors, including effects from the light environment. LÄS MER
