The students that I have interviewed attend the upper high school in a special class, separated from the major school. My purpose has been to investigate how such students experience their studies at school, with emphasis on competence and the feeling of participation. Moreover, the self image of these students was investigated. My method has been qualitative, consisting of interviews performed on seven students. I have used a hermeneutic interpretation on the analysis of my interviews. The result shows that most students experience that they have succeeded during their study but that they have different views concerning the concept of competence. The major part of these special students has a poor self image. The feeling of participation shows that just half of such students feel as included in classes but that none feels included in the whole school as an entirety. My discussion presents advantages and disadvantages encountered when such students attend special classes. Another part of my discussion is the knowledge related grading system adopted in Swedish schools which may cause problems for students with special needs. My conclusion is that nowadays it is not easy to have an included school; if we wish to have such a school, more personnel to our schools are required.
