Sammanfattning: This is a report that is part of a master thesis at an undergraduate level, which comprises 15 university education credits and has been completed at Mälardalen University in Eskilstuna. The work is within the subject of product development and has been carried out by two students during the spring term of 2018. The students have mainly worked with the companies August Lundh AB and Mälarplast AB, where the assignment has been against August Lundh AB. The assignment was to compile a breakfast buffet of the company's existing product range, focusing on sales in the Scandinavia. Furthermore, the project led to developing a new design and design language for a new series of self-serving products made of plastic for a breakfast buffet. This was done by specifying only one product, the group chose to use a bowl as the derivative product for the design and design language. During the development of product and design language, aspects such as quality, labeling, materials, manufacturing methods, ergonomics, product semantics, etc. have been investigated and considered. During the work, the group has focused on creating a product that is easy to manufacture, high quality and has a clear but simple design to achieve high affordance to match the client's positions with their product range today. In order to define the assignment further, the group raised the following main issues and research question: Research question: • How should you design self-service products in plastic to compete with the same type of products in other materials? Main issues: • What kind of shape- and design language meets customer requirements and needs for sales in the Scandinavia, by self-service tools in the context of hotel- and restaurant breakfast? • Which of August Lundh's existing products meet the costumer’s requirements and needs for self-serving tools in hotel and restaurant breakfasts? In order for the project to have a scientific foundation, the work has been based on a theoretical reference framework. In addition to this, experts in the field have consulted and product development tools originating from referenced literature have also been used. The project resulted in a bowl of a new design- and shape language, which is presented in the result. Also, other products have been visualized through CAD to show how the language of shape can be applied to other products, but there has been no consideration for manufacturing or further considerations.
