Sammanfattning: The objective of this study was to gain deeper understanding for the impact of physical exercise on emotions, and psychological well-being in ten healthy adults aged 18–35. Semi-structured interviews were conducted based on six main areas: Information, Significance of exercise, Emotions, Emotional regulation, and Cancelled exercise. Thematic analysis was performed and nine themes were generated: Letting go of everything else, Something to be proud of, A source of energy and joy, Being a part of something larger, The pressure to perform, The fear of losing shape, Stops me from falling, The grief of not being able to exercise, Frustrating uphills. The results showed that physical exercise raised mood, energy levels and sense of confidence among the participants. It also gave the participants a sense of identity, due to belonging to a group of people who exercise. The level of confidence was associated with exercise performances. Higher performance affected the belief in oneself on other areas such as work and studies. Lower exercise performance showed to decrease confidence and cause self-critique. The results illuminate the impact of exercise in terms of calming effects and as a strategy for relaxation. Participants described feelings of loss, sadness, disappointment and frustration associated with being prevented from exercising. The study illustrates the complex nature of how physical exercise impact emotions and well-being.
