Skaminventering: Resultatet av ett lyckat möte mellan forskning och klinisk verksamhet

Sammanfattning: The main purpose of this study was to do a psychometric testing of a new
shame instrument created by Rizvi, The Shame Inventory, and the
development of a Swedish version of the instrument. Another purpose
was to discuss the research of self-concious emotions, to which shame
belongs, and raise its difficulties. The original instrument was translated
and distributed to 73 people from a convenience sample. A psychometric
analysis showed that the instrument had high internal consistency and
test-retest reliability of both the instrument in its entirety and the two
subscales. The correlation between the subscales was high but
nonetheless showed that they measured different aspects of shame. The
conclusion was that the first subscale measured shame as a state and that
the second subscale measured shame as a trait, which corresponded to
Rizvis intention. However, the second subscale measured generalized
shame and not event-specific shame as Rizvi intended. The convergent
and discriminant validity was high with the exception of a significant
correlation between the second subscale and guilt. Further analysis
concluded that the correlation was likely due to an overlay of generalized
shame on the guiltscale. The Shame Inventory was originally a list of
shame-triggering situations created and used in a clinical setting. A
further development has created a versatile instrument, suitable for both
research and clinical practice.
