Sammanfattning: A consultant is an external expert that exists within all types of organizations. The consulting service can be divided into individual practitioners and large companies whose sole task is to hire out consultants to clients. The need for consultants has grown due to the restructuring of Swedish businesses during the past decades. They have put parts of their business on contract. This has led to a market with other player that have been able to focus on these parts. A branch that has evolved is management consulting. People that work within this specific branch possess a great knowledge in management responsibilities and how companies should be directed. Consequently the consultant´s purpose is to function as a councilor to the managers, but he or she can also be awarded different tasks depending on what type of client that hires them. There are also numerous of different views regarding management consultants. This is based on positive and negative experiences that clients have had during the collaboration with themThe management consultant´s function in project related work is to see the given problem in two different perspectives, the human and the technical. That means to be able to identify either the management issues or how the employees look at the problem. Due to the complexity of evaluating management consultants there is no appropriate method for it. The aspect that can be evaluated is to which degree the project has succeeded, based on time, budget and quality of the result. What is achieved puts a stamp on the management consultant´s effort. A complete evaluation would be that the participants’ voices should be heard regarding the management consultant´s effort. The purpose of the report is to gain knowledge on how a management consultant is evaluated in projects. A literature study has been conducted to gain an understanding of the consultancy service and to find existing models of evaluation. An empirical study has also been conducted that consists of an interview. The conclusion of this report is that evaluation of a management consultants work in project related tasks is based on the substantial results of the project and not the participants’ opinion.
