Sammanfattning: The labour market is characterized by the conflict between those who sell and those who buy labour, between workers and employers. The conflict becomes clear in the employment policy in Swedish labour law, especially with regard to so-called fixed-term work. In contrast to permanent employment, fixed-term employment contracts terminate without prior termination at the end of the employment period. Their legal development can be seen as a significant expression of the conflicts and changes that characterize the labour market and Swedish labour law at large. The aim of this essay is to place the fixed-term employment contracts in a historical and ideological context. Its empirical basis is a study of the legal development of the fixed-term employment contracts from the introduction of the 1974 Act on Employment Protection until the most recent changes in 2016. The theoretical framework consists of Anna Christensen's theory of basic normative patterns, a theory that addresses the tension between the moral conceptions that law is based upon. The thesis of the essay is that there has been a clear shift in which ideological values and interests have the greatest impact on Swedish labour law. The ability of jurisprudence to explain this shift is questioned.
