Open access och de institutionella arkivens roll i vetenskaplig kommunikation vid universitet och högskolor : en systematisk litteraturöversikt

Sammanfattning: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the research on open access and institutional repositories between the years 2002-2016. 2002 was seen as a natural starting point because of the Budapest Open Access Initiative and represents a pivotal point in the history of open access. Further, the paper aims to analyze the positioning of institutional repositories within open access and scholarly communication. Method – In order to meet the purpose of the paper we employ the systematic literature review as method to review and collect 45 scholarly articles from the databases Proquest LISA (Library & information science abstracts), EBSCO LISTA (Library, information science & technology abstracts) and Web of Science. The material chosen is focused on research from the field of library and information science, but relevant articles from other fields have also been included. Findings – The study identifies that the surveyed research on open access and institutional repositories often focuses on identifying the benefits and barriers of implementing institutional repositories. Some major stakeholders in institutional repositories are also identified and their drivers and motivations for contributing to the implementation of institutional repositories are discussed. We analyse our findings after an ecological analysis which focuses on the stakeholders identified and how these interact in their perceptions of, and their work with building and maintaining institutional repositories. Within the ecological analysis we implement the term boundary object as a theoretical tool in understanding institutional repositories as both abstract object and physical work. We argue that institutional repositories do not fully operate as a successful boundary object due to a lack of coherence in how they are perceived and used across the social spheres of its stakeholders. Value – The value of the paper lies in providing an overview of the research on open access and institutional repositories from the Budapest Open Access Initiative in 2002 until 2016. The paper also provides an understanding of institutional repositories through the active stakeholders working with its implementation and maintenance and the varying ways in which the role of the institutional repository is understood.
