Sammanfattning: Our methods of communication have recently undergone a massive shift towards increased use of social media as a primary communication tool. The purpose of this study is to gauge the state of social media use among Swedish municipalities, to explore the underlying goals behind their use of the technology and to find common themes among the municipalities with the most successful social media presence. Using a quantitative research method we have created several visualiations of the general state of social media usage and using these insights we have conducted an interview study with seven of the most successful municipalities. In our study we find that the municipalities most successful in social media share an array of traits and have similar goals for their social media presence. We find that the primary goals common among the successful municipalities happen to be goals concerning increased benefit to citizens; increased speed of communications, interactivity and transparency.
