Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how social services utilizing Chapter 5. Section 11 of the Swedish social service act when it comes to identify the needs of women experiencing domestic violence. Furthermore the study aims to investigate how the social services look at the need of women experiencing domestic violence seeking protective shelter together with their pets. The study's purpose and research question was answered with a qualitative approach where semi-structured interviews were conducted. Eight social workers from seven municipalities where participating in the interviews. The result of the study showing that in order to identify needs different standard methods are used and problem solving approach is practiced by social workers. When it comes to identifying needs of women seeking protective shelter with their pet whilst escaping a domestic violent home, study concludes that social workers that participated in the interview do not or rarely encounter this specific group of women in their daily practice.  However, based on the assumption that taking your pet with you is a need amongst other needs the socialworkers taking an indecisive approach. On one hand they are identifying the complex situation and are having empathy with the women, on the other hand they argue for high costs, difficult to achieve and that the decision is not in their hands.
