According to the Curriculum for the course Swedish as a Second Language, one objective of the course is that it should contain literature from various genres and cultures and that the texts should be written by women as well as men. In 2012, there were two different textbooks to be used in the teaching of the course Swedish as a Second Language 1;  Kontext, Svenska som andraspåk 1 by Eva Hedencrona and Karin Smed-Gerdin and Språkporten, Svenska som andraspråk 1 2 3 by Monika Åström. The authors of both text books claim that their books meet the objectives of the course Swedish as a Second Language. I have analyzed the text books using a product-oriented and ideology critical method in order to study how well the text books meet the objectives of the course as well as to study where the items unfold and what they are about. I have found that neither Kontext nor Språkporten meet the objectives. Kontext is lacking texts from several continents. However, several different genres are represented in the book. Almost all authors come from Europe, particularly from Sweden. Two-thirds of the authors are men.  Språkporten on the other hand, mainly consists of newspaper articles or teaching materials texts. Only a few genres and continents are represented in the book. More than one third of the texts are written by the author herself. Of the remaining articles, two-thirds of the authors are women.
