Sammanfattning: Authors: Elin Svensson and Pauline Thynell Title: Work out more and eat less! A foolproof way to reach the ideal. Supervisor: David Hoff Assessor: Weddig Runquist The aim of this study was to examine how Swedish newspapers describe working out and weight loss. We have done this study with a gender perspective to be able to analyse how weight loss and working out is described mainly for females. We have also linked this to different forms of anorexia. To be able to look closer at the description regarding weight loss and working out we have done the analyse based on three concepts: power, stereotypes and social construction. Our empirical material has been collected from three big Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet, Metro and Expressen. We have searched for the words work out and weight loss to find articles connected to our purpose. To carry out our study we have used a qualitative content analysis. This method gave us the possibility to examine how the Swedish newspapers talk about working out and weight loss and how this may affect the development of anorexia. The results of our study shows that the description of weight loss and working out is that you should reach your goals fast, that you have the responsibility to achieve the expected body ideal for women and if you do this you have succeeded in life. In order to achieve this women are called to eat less and work out more. We have come to the conclusion based on previous studies that this could result in the eating disorder anorexia.
