Securitization move? En jämförande studie om hur regionala organisationer uttrycker sig om konflikter inom respektive utom deras egen region

Sammanfattning: Since the ending of the Cold War, regional organizations have been evolving as subjects for international peace and security. It is argued that this development is connected to the claim that the UN has been increasingly inefficient and unable to manage international peace and security on its own. The purpose of this thesis is to further address regional organizations as objects for analysis by conducting a comparative study aiming to describe the possible differences in how regional organizations talk about conflicts within and outside of their regions. The conflicts are used as indicators to examine whether the regional organizations are more inclined to take responsibility for a conflict within or outside of their regions. The result is based on the examination of statements from the ASEAN, the AU and the EU using a discourse analysis when applying the securitization theory, more specifically the securitization move, on the material. The study examined whether securitization move’s had been constituted by the regional organizations and the result is that the AU was the only case that constituted a securitization move in this thesis. The conclusion is that there are several differences in how the objects of analysis express themselves with regards to the indicators resulting in a wide and non-generalizable result.
