Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: A research of prostitution in Sweden shows that it is more common with male prostitution than it is with female prostitution. Despite the fact that it is more common with male prostitution, there are more female prostitutes that meet social workers. Our purpose with this study was to examine why some men choose to prostitute. How does he get in contact with his customer and where do they meet. Our purpose is also to examine why male prostitution is a social problem. We have chosen to interview six people who work with/examine male prostitution and use their perspective in our analyse. The theories we have used are Activity theory and Symbolic Interaction. These theories can help us explain male prostitution. We have used an interview method because it can help us understand male prostitution on deeper level. Our study shows that male prostitution is a social problem because these men often have problem with their psychical and physical health. For example a man can choose to prostitute to finance his drug abuse. Our conclusion is also that money is the main factor why a man begins and continues with prostitution. As long as the prostitution is an advantage and has a function in the mans life he continues to prostitute. When the prostitution becomes disadvantage for the man he ends to prostitute. Our study shows that it is difficult to categorize a male prostitute. He can have any culture, religion, nationality, sexuality, age or class. Our final conclusion is that a male prostitute contacts his customers mainly on the Internet. He can also contact his customers in public areas, for example at the pub. The sexual intercourse between the male prostitute and his customer can take place anywhere, anytime.
