Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study was to examine the possible interrelationships between stress, optimism, pessimism and coping strategies. A further aim was to examine the possible gender differences regarding the studies variables. Versions of the questionnaires that measure stress, optimism, pessimism and coping strategies were distributed out to 100 employees in different workplaces and answered individually. Multiple regression analysis showed that the optimism/pessimism mediated the effects some of the coping strategies on stress. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and T test showed that there were no gender differences in stress, optimism and some of the coping strategies. However, there were gender differences regarding pessimism, active coping, instrumental social support, positive reinterpretation, planning and religion. Optimism and pessimism were not directly opposite to each other. Optimistic vision and positive coping strategies may considered as protective factors against repeated threats and prolonged periods of stress.
