Sammanfattning: The city is a popular place to live in, though a modern trend in Sweden is to move from the city to rural country within commuting distance of the city (Wallin 2002). The city is apparently lacking something. This sprawl is not sustainable with the amount of people that inhabitants the world today. Despite the high prices for land in the city, there are sites which are not efficiently used, the roofs. If the use of roofs would be used to please the inhabitants of the city, it could reduce the urge to move out of the city. This essay deals with the role of the landscape architect in the society and the way landscape architects view roofs. It is a bachelor thesis with in the program of landscape architecture and covers ten weeks of full time studies. The study is based on literature studies and interviews with people in the business of landscape architecture and/or green roofs in Malmo, Sweden. The result shows that the business of landscape architecture and green roofs lack proper information channels, self reflection, and has institutional/administrative problems. Information is primarily spread from person to person which can result in rumours. There is not enough time or effort put into reflecting on where one is going but only that one is going. Economical and administrative factors works discouraging and changes are needed to make it more profitable for the proprietor. The only well established use of roofs is extensive green roofs and there is a lack of competition within the business of green roofs. There is a lot of research done on the technical part of green roofs but to make it an interesting job for landscape architects the roof first of all has to be a place which humans can use. There is useful experience of building parks or yards on top of garages but there are too seldom follow-ups of those projects.
