Sammanfattning: Few studies have examined emergency placements in secure accommodation, even though this is the most common proceeding when adolescents enter this kind of care. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative study was to explore adolescents’ experiences and approaches to emergency placements in secure accommodation (SiS). Individual interviews were conducted with four adolescents, two girls and two boys aged 16-19, admitted to compulsory care (LVU). During the interviews they were still placed in secure accommodation. To analyze the empirical results, Goffman’s theory of total institutions has been used. From this theory, the experience of emergency placement can be interpreted as adapting to a new role. The main results show that feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and being under constant evaluation were prominent following the emergency placement. The adolescents’ statements were characterised by their uncertainty of the length of the emergency placement. Analysis show that resistance, compliance and critical reflection was used to manage the emergency placement. The study concludes that the adolescents expressed that they did not receive any help during the emergency placement, due to the lack of essential content. However, they stated that the emergency placement established a break from their earlier problems, thereby starting a process of change.
