Sammanfattning: School results and how schools should be governed was one of the biggest topics in the last Swedish elections in 2014. PISA results have shown that Sweden has had a downfall in school results between the nineties and up until 2016. This has sparked numerous debates about makings the schools more equal and weather school governance should be reformed. This empirical thesis will examine the secondary schools in Sweden’s second city Gothenburg and state the differences between them. The thesis will primarily examine the share of students that manage to pass the lowest expected proficiency in every course. We will try to explain the variation between schools with socioeconomic factors and other school specific factors. Gothenburg is known for being a very segregated city which makes it interesting to compare with earlier national results that examine similar outputs. Our results show that geographic positioning in the city has by far the largest impact on how well children manage in school performance, this is straightened by the mentioned segregation. Gothenburg is making a governance reform in the school sector which will make it more centralized, with hope that it will make the schools better, which only time and future studies will tell.
