Sammanfattning: Abstract Title: Threats and violence at day centres - A qualitative study of staffs’ experiences of their responsibility to report violence and threats from people with developmental disorders (Translated title) Supervisor: Lupita Svensson Assessor: Anna Rypi Threats and violence from people with developmental disorders towards staff are common (Lundström 2006). Nevertheless, the number of incidents is unknown, as staff working with people with developmental disorders do not tend to report cases of threats and violence. Wikman (2012) theorizes that the reason for underreporting, in most professional groups, is that staff tends to normalize threats and violence. People with developmental disorders have limited possibilities to express themselves, which can result in threats and violence that are not intentional (Lundström 2006). The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how staff experience reporting threats and violence from people with developmental disorders. The empirical data consisted of seven semi-structured interviews. The analytical tools that were used were normalization, the process of normalization and social categorization. The study suggests that while the staff finds it important to report threats and violence from people with developmental disorders they tend to underreport. The staff normalizes the violence from people with developmental disorders as they experience the violence and threats as something that comes with the job, which they need to tolerate. The staff also experiences a sense of responsibility for violence and threats from people with developmental disorders and find it difficult to establish boundaries for threats and violence.
