Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to investigate the role of school counsellors in the work of helping children diagnosed with ADHD to feel good mentally and socially in the school environment. The study investigates how school counsellors work individually with these children and also together with other collaborators and organisations to help these children develop and overcome their difficulties. The sample group of this study consists of a goal-oriented selection to ensure that the sample was relevant for the study. The sample group consists of four school counsellors whom work at four different municipal primary schools. Semi structured interviews were used with an interview guide consisting of a few introductory questions and themes to explore, such as goal development, counselling meetings, environmental influences and collaborations with others. To analyse the interviews three different theories were applied in the analysis, Erving Goffman’s theories of teams and social stigma and Max Weber’s theory of social actions. The results of the study showed that school counsellor’s work with children diagnosed with ADHD is based on improving and adjusting the learning environment for these children so that their physical, mental and social health is improved. This is to ensure that these children have the same opportunity to succeed in school as other children. This should be achieved through the counsellor’s work with individual support and counselling sessions to accommodate the child’s individual mental and social difficulties and through classroom based interventions and adjustments. The counsellors must also work in a continuous cooperation with other collaborators such as teachers, parents and other organisations such as the child psychiatric clinic etc.
