Sammanfattning:

Background: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a complex condition with high mortality. AN has increased within the last fifty years and it’s associated with considerable suffering.

Aim: To describe women’s experiences of AN.

Method: This study was made as a systematic literature review. Articles were searched in Chinal, PubMed and PsycINFO. Eleven articles were used. Analysis and interpretation were inspired by qualitative content analysis. Eriksson’s nursing theory was used as background in the discussion.

Results: We synthesized the findings into five categories; Experiences of negative self-image. Experiences of control needs and the lack of control. AN was seen as a tool. Experiences of being detached from and at the same time influenced by the environment. Experiences of AN as part of the identity and to continue a destructive behavior.

Conclusions: Lack of control is significant for women’s experience of AN, this must be acknowledged by caregivers when meeting women with AN in a nursing context.
