Sammanfattning: Background: Regarding to today's political and environmental climate, disasters occurfrequently and globally. The consequences may be devastating to society and can cause greatsuffering to the individual. Purpose: To investigate the nurses preparedness and role indisasters. Method: A general literature review. The databases PubMed and Cinahl were usedto find literature. A total of 20 articles were included, of which eleven were qualitativestudies, eight quantitative and one mixed method. The articles were carefully reviewed andrelevant statements, as well as findings related to the authors' questions in these, were notedand categorized into subcategories, which then received two overall categories. Result: showsthat nurses experience increased preparedness for disaster nursing if they had previousexperience of disasters, or education in the subject. Nurse’s role in disaster medicine wasprimarily to provide physical care and psychological support to the victims, as well as to holdan organizational position. Conclusion: Disaster training in specific disaster care should bemade possible by employers as well as implemented in the nurse's basic education.
