Sammanfattning: Waste is a growing environmental problem, especially organic waste that decomposes and generates large emissions of methane. In controlled environments, the methane emissions could instead be used to reduce the use of virgin substances, example fossil fouls. A good waste management is therefore of most importance which sometimes can be difficult to achieve. The waste management is particularly difficult at tourist destinations due to the fluctuating of waste during the year. The lack of studies within the field is problematic and it is of important to find solutions. This study compared three collecting system of food waste, to find out which is the most preferable in a sustainable development perspective. The aim with this paper was to find solutions to the tourist situation in the municipality of Borgholm, Sweden. Two surveys were performed provide that answer, one for the residents and the other for camps and holiday villages. The study shows that “separata kärl” is overall the most sustainable collecting system of food waste. For Borgholm the colleting system “optisk sortering” was found to be the most favorable. Because Borgholm already have implement the system and it would be expensive to introduce a new one, that only would give a slightly better collection ratio of food waste. The two surveys show that the camps and holiday villages causes most of the problem within waste management in Borgholm. Because the camps and holiday villages do not provide the guests enough opportunely to sort their waste. To get the best waste management at tourist destinations is it important that the governing in the area sets clear goals of what the waste management should achieve. It is also vital that the waste management is designed according to local conditions to receive the best result.
