Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to examine how some women view their gender role in the contemporary Indian society, and also how they relate to gender equality in a community where men are given social preferences. We have done a qualitative study based on observations and seven interviews with women from urban and rural areas in Bangalore, India. All the women were members of an organization supervised by Centre of Social Action on Christ University which focusing at women empowerment. To analyze our empirics we have used perspectives from feminist theory and gender studies. The main conclusion of our survey was that women in the Indian society find their feminine gender role in a positive way even though they still are being denied social opportunities. Education proved to be of great importance for the women in order to achieve gender equality in the Indian society. The Indian culture still has a strongly affect on the stereotypical gender role, and the definition of equality is rather complex because of that.
