Sammanfattning: In this master thesis we aim to create examples on how to develop the climate adaption for increased sea levels in the coastal landscape of Skåne, to not only work as a defence against the sea, but also be combined with social, aesthetic and ecological values. The work results in a design proposal, which was used to compete in the idea competition Imagine Open Skåne 2030. All over our planet the climate is changing because of heightened levels of greenhouse gas. With higher sea water temperatures the water molecules expand. This in combination with melting polar ices causes the sea levels to rise (Church et al. 2013, s. 1143). In Sweden this is a bigger problem in Skåne than it is in the rest of the country because there is no isostatic uplift there (Ehrnstèn et al. 2014, s. 3). When discussing rising sea levels, it is often mentioned as a problem or threat. Can we see it as an opportunity to create new qualities instead? Can we combine the protective structures with social sites and recreational areas, and make them aesthetically pleasing or make them bring ecological values? What happens if we instead of shield away from the sea try to embrace the qualities that come with it? In the proposal the reader can follow an imaginary coastline, based on the coast of Skåne, through five different locations, each with their own specific character and conditions. The proposal begins in the dense and populated city and then gradually takes the reader along less exploited areas with fewer people, and finally stops in the untouched nature. Each location has its own defence strategy depending on its individual character and conditions. In the different sites we show ideas on how to develop the protective structures, so that they in addition to being just protection also bring social, aesthetic and ecological values. As the shoreline rises, it also moves closer to the private gardens, resulting in reduced public places along the coastline. In our design proposal we focus on securing the public’s right to the coastline. The sea belongs to everybody!
