Mycket mer än ett bibliotek : Integrationsfrämjande arbete på tre stadsbibliotek
Sammanfattning: This essay is about how the public library can have a role in the integration of immigrants in the Swedish society. The constant stream of refugees to Sweden in the last few years is what inspired this essay. We examine how different functions and activities of libraries can affect the integration of immigrants, and what role the public library can have in the integration process. Our questions are: How do library employees see the role of the library when it comes to the integration of immigrants? How do city libraries work with integration of immigrants? How do city libraries reach out to immigrants as a target group? We have structured our material gathered through interviews according to these questions. We then used the theory created by Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hansen called the four functions of the library, both to interpret and to analyze the material in relation to our second question. We have also used parts of Albert Diaz integration theory to analyze the material for all three questions and to show that the public library can actually play a communicative, personal and social role in the integration process. We have found connections between the public library´s four functions according to Andersson and Skot-Hansen, and Diaz´s communicative, personal and social integration, and in this way managed to relate activities and functions of the public library to the integration of immigrants in the Swedish society.
