Demokratins Vägkorsning

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: Democratization has taken place in several countries in Africa, but a democratic consolidation is far more difficult to reach. Thus, this thesis aims to see why some countries develop democratic consolidation and why some experience difficulties achieving it. The framework presents an analysis based on Linz and Stepans theory consisting of five categories and implementing this on two quite similar countries, Ghana and Zambia which have had two very different outcomes concerning their democratic consolidation. The results shows that Zambia suffers from many problems, pushing it further away from a consolidated democracy, especially when it comes to the civil society, corruption and distrust concerning politics. Ghana on the other hand has achieved a very responsive and concerned civil society that has helped the country to further develop as well as at the same time been able to maintain a persistent interest for the country’s political development and forth going, the wish of maintaining the status of the role model in Africa.
