Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: The aim with this study has been to understand the process of leaving a life of criminality, using the concept of turning points and Ebaugh’s theory “The process of role exit”. Seven qualitative interviews have been made with ex-criminals that stopped offending before they turned twenty-six years old. The main result of this study is that we can see a few different situations; being arrested, getting pregnant and traumatic situations that functions like eye-openers. To use these situations as turning points, it is important that a person gets help from institutions like family and friends, organizations, and more. The will to success with the desistance from crime is also something that we can see as an important factor to make the turning points successful. So, to understand turning points, we can see that it is equally important to understand the complex processes they arise in. But, and this is important to point out, the concept of turning point has been a useful tool to analyse the stories that the interviewees told.
