Abstract

“Not Another Poem…!” is a qualitative study about teaching literature at Upper Secondary School’s vocational courses. The aim of this study is to investigate how teachers of Swedish language select materials and how they conduct their work with Swedish literature in the first year of the Swedish syllabus. This study also investigates how students on vocational courses are, through the national curriculum (Gy2011), affected from a democratic perspective.

Interviews with teachers, who are currently working with Swedish involving first year vocational students, make up the foundation in this study. Previous research, the national curriculum and data from Statistics Sweden (SCB) are presented and discussed together with the result from the interview study.

The conclusion of the study shows that it is mainly the students’ level of knowledge that is the deciding factor regarding how the teachers work and what they include in their lessons. The content of the lessons is mixed, whilst the delivery is often conducted with collective reading of texts out loud, which allow the teacher to discuss the content of the text with the students. Classic literature is used but can advantageously be depicted through film, while short stories and teenage books are prevalent for reading.

The course objectives stated in the national curriculum indicate how a teacher in Swedish has different functions depending on whether they are teaching students on a vocational or theoretical course.

The students inadequate reading skills arose as the main reason against a predicated literature canon. Views pro a canon was motivated with statements that it would have been good if all students got the opportunity to be acquainted with certain literature.
