Teorierna representeras dels av Robert Putnams teori om civilsamhället som en arena där socialt kapital och tillit skapas mellan medborgare, och dels av Jean Cohen och Andrew Aratos teori som ser civilsamhället som en inflytandekanal mellan medborgare och staten respektive det ekonomiska och politiska samhället.
