Using a deconstructive and intersectional approach, the project focuses on four interconnected constituents that regulate the novel’s main structural and thematic elements: Narrative Structure; Mother-Daughter Relationships; Language, Writing and Identity; and Feminist Affirmations.     Sammanfattning : The aim of this study is to create an understanding of how American media depicts Asian- Americans and the hate and violence against them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study analyses two American newspapers: The New York Times and USA Today to answer the following questions: How does The New York Times and USA Today depict hate crimes against Asian-Americans? Which individuals get to make their voices heard in the articles about hate against Asian-Americans? Which identities are given to Asian-Americans and how are they communicated? What are the potential consequences of depicting Asian-Americans in the way the media does? The theory and method used in this study is Laclau and Mouffes’s discourse theory, which is suitable for a study where the aim is to understand the nature of something. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Following the development of Asian American representation in the United States media in the 21st century, this thesis aims to explore the alternative narratives provided by the AsianBossGirl podcast which started in 2017 to fill the gap in the mainstream media. Intersectional framework has been operationalized to conduct an in-depth reading of their narratives, and complemented by the theory of uses and gratification to investigate the impacts that they have on their audiences.     Sammanfattning : Through a decolonial lens, visual culture can offer a variety of methods for solidarity-, community-, and future-building among people of color and other marginalized identities through applied imagination. However, a common impulse in these community-building endeavors is to explain as much as possible or to direct the image to the white gaze––a colonial ideology––which can further marginalize and unintentionally other the depicted subjects.
