The question to answer through studying research on the matter is how are language development strategies used in mathematical learning? The subsequent questions that we posed were why is it important with language development to learn math, how do students learn the language in mathematics, how does the use of language affect the possibility to learn mathematic and finally how are multilingual students’ possibilities to learn mathematics affected? The purpose of my research is an attempt to give a picture of how a team of teachers in a primary school act together when teaching maths, as the majority of the pupils have another mother tounge than Swedish. Uppsats för yrkesexamina på avancerad nivå, LärarutbildningenSammanfattning : Students with foreign background do not reach the goals of mathematics education in the Swedish school to the same extent as students with a Swedish background, this is shown in a number of Swedish and international reports. Both Swedish and international research show that it takes many more years to learn a language so well that the student is capable of learning new school-related knowledge in this new language than just using the language for everyday speech.
