To that end, it studies (1) the historic and contemporary relationship between Québec and Canada, (2) the meaning of the right to self-determination within international law, (3) possibilities for unilateral secession, and (4) secession by virtue of democracy. It does so through analysis of three cases, the destruction of Yuanmingyuan during the British-French North Shina Campaign of 1860, the destruction of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan by the Taliban in 2001 and the Canadian Residential School system of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as through comparison to the concept of genocide. This study seeks to develop and further the MIPEX framework in an economic context, through an examination of labour market integration, labour market integration and public attitudes towards immigration in France and Canada.
