  1. 1. Exploration of the hereditary cause of sex ratio distortion in horses

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics

    Författare :Susan Ott; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Sex ratio; horse; selfish genetic elements; meiotic drive; Icelandic horse; Standardbred horse; Coldblooded trotters; heritability; Trivers-Willard hypothesis; pedigree data;

    Sammanfattning : Even sex ratios are seen as evolutionarily stable and are maintained by a selection against a skewed sex ratio. However, sometimes sex ratios at birth are skewed towards one sex. Reasons for this phenomenon are often unknown. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Genetic background of temperament traits in standardbred trotters

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics

    Författare :Paulina Berglund; [2021]
    Nyckelord :temperament; standardbred trotter; heritability; low-pass whole genome sequencing;

    Sammanfattning : The genetic background of temperament traits in horses has been subject for research for many years to obtain understanding of domestication, breed differences and welfare. Previous studies have found heritabilities ranging from low to moderate for temperament. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Can eye-temperature variation from exercise explain behaviour profiles among trotting horses?

    Kandidat-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics

    Författare :Paulina Berglund; [2019]
    Nyckelord :eye-temperature; horse behaviour; stress; trotting horses; harness racing; Standardbred; coldblooded trotter;

    Sammanfattning : Eye-temperature measured with infrared thermography have in previous studies showed significant correlation to competition results in harness racing. Studies also show a positive correlation between serotonin level in blood and eye-temperature which indicates that this method could serve as an indicator of stress and welfare in harness racing. 4. 4. Is a potential regulatory region in the vicinity of EDN3 linked to the performance in Standardbred horses?

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics

    Författare :Linda Novácková; [2018]
    Nyckelord :performance; standardbred; EDN3; endothelin-3;

    Sammanfattning : Standardbred horses (SBs) are used in harness racing. Their common breeding history with Coldblooded trotters (CBTs) led us to the hypothesis, that the same region associated with race performance in CBTs, may be linked to the performance of SBs as well. EDN3 SNP (g.22:45748491C>T), was found to be associated (p. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The role of Myostatin polymorphisms in the Finnhorse and Shetland pony breeds

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Breeding and Genetics

    Författare :Laura Bas Conn; [2017]
    Nyckelord :Horse; Myostatin; Finnhorse; Shetland pony; Harness racing; Performance; Conformation;

    Sammanfattning : Myostatin, encoded by the MSTN gene, is a member of the transforming growth factor β that normally acts to limit skeletal muscle mass by regulating both the number and growth of muscle fibers. Natural mutations that decrease the amounts of myostatin and/or inhibit its function have been identified in several cattle, sheep and dog breeds, where loss-of-function mutations cause increased skeletal muscle mass and produce a phenotype known as “double-muscling”.
