   Sammanfattning : Uppsatsen har tre syften; det första syftet är att teckna bildromanens historiska framväxt och redogöra för fältet. Bildromanen är en teknisk innovation, sprungen ur samma era som bilderboken och serierna, det tidiga 1830-talet, när nya trycktekniker gör det möjligt att trycka tunna linjer i både färg och svart/vitt och en ny sorts boksida skapas – där text och bild kan integreras – ett tekniskt språng som lockar till sig både innovatörer och konstnärer.
