    Sammanfattning : This study consists of an analysis of the novel Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters, in terms of cross-dressing as self-representation. The study aims to emphasise how cross-dressing can be significant when expressing one’s gender identity, by examining the gender identity and sexual orientation of the male impersonator Nancy Astley/Nan King and how she reacts to her own queerness.     Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is firstly to demonstrate how an ideal of symbiosis permeates our cultures writing of love stories, and to demonstrate the oppressive mechanisms within this ideal. I suggest an ideal of symbiosis as being oppressive in itself, by placing it under the psychoanalytical subject-object paradigm, where the subject can never perceive of the other as anything but a rejected or incorporated part of itself.     Sammanfattning : Anne Charlotte Leffler, Victoria Benedictsson and Frida Stéenhoff were all part of the Modern Breakthrough in Swedish literature. By utilizing Jürgen Habermas theoretical works on communicative action, and Nancy Fraser’s supplementary reading of his theory, this essay makes clear that the authors’ struggle for an understanding and a rethinking of social norms in their plays Skådespelerskan (1873), Romeos Julia (1888) and Lejonets unge (1896) can be read as a contribution to the public debate.
