This thesis examines whether Sweden experienced net costs or benefits in opting out the EMU, especially in comparison to Finland due to the close link between both economies, as well as cultural and geographical similarities.     Sammanfattning : This paper is an assessment of whether the Nordic countries constitute an optimum currency area (OCA) or not. Hodrick Prescott-­‐filtered data of real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and rate of employment are used to investigate the similarity of business cycles between the target countries through a series of correlation analysis with Sweden as the base reference country and also by using a linear regression model.     Sammanfattning : This essay analyses to what extent the Latin American countries of Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Venezuela, within the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), fulfil the criteria for an optimum currency area (OCA). It does so by applying the theory of optimum currency areas (Mundell 1961), and by examining the different factors of asymmetric shocks, openness, production diversification and labour flexibility.
