  1. 1. Assessing water balance and yields in Malawian cropping systems : maize soybean and maize Gliricidia systems resilience against climate change

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Soil and Environment

    Författare :Danila Valeriano; [2024]
    Nyckelord :crop modelling; APSIM; Malawi; maize; soybean; Gliricidia; agroforestry; legume intercropping; climate predictions; climate adaptation; SDSM;

    Sammanfattning : In Malawi, maize monocultures are increasingly susceptible to extreme weather patterns, causing considerable yield reduction and heightened food insecurity for smallholder farmers dependent on rainfed subsistence agriculture. Diversifying cropping systems is crucial for ensuring yield resilience. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Shifting focus from yields to food supply : an evaluation of the ‘number of people fed per hectare’ indicator at farm and national level

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Department of Molecular Sciences

    Författare :Ida Ekqvist; [2024]
    Nyckelord :Land use efficiency; Sustainability indicators; Agricultural productivity; Food production;

    Sammanfattning : The challenge of feeding a growing global population while reducing the pressure on climate and ecosystems has gained much attention in research over the last decades. A crucial yet often overlooked aspect in research addressing this complex challenge is the efficiency of food production in meeting nutritional needs within the constraints of global cropland resources. 3. 3. From wheat to lawns : urban expansion to agricultural lands in Finland from 2000 to 2018 and its implications to food security

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Författare :Antti Olof Ilari Säkkinen; [2023]
    Nyckelord :agriculture; food security; GIS; Sustainable Development; urban expansion;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates the extent of urban expansion on agricultural lands in Finland, its effects on the national agricultural output and the implications to national food security and sheds some light to the reasons of why agricultural land is converted to urban land in Finland. This complex issue was approached through mixed research methods. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Assessing the Eco-efficiency of Swedish Crop Farms and the Role of Subsidies : a Directional Distance Function Approach

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Economics

    Författare :Therese Ratilla; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Swedish crop farmers; CAP subsidies; FADN; stochastic frontier analysis; multi-output; one-step approach;

    Sammanfattning : The agriculture sector’s contribution to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and its increasing vulnerability to the effects of climate change warrants assessments considering not only on-farm productivity but also the industry’s environmental sustainability. Utilizing the concept of eco-efficiency, this study analyzes the environmental performance of Swedish crop farms by incorporating farm-level GHG emissions as an undesirable output in the production function. 5. 5. Fertile Lands: Fertility and Agriculture in an 8 Billion World : An empirical study on how agricultural output affects fertility rates in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Kandidat-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Nationalekonomiska institutionen

    Författare :Isabella Chee-Awai; Clara Lindvall; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Agricultural Output; Instrumental Variable; Least Developed Countries; Sub Saharan Africa; Total Fertility Rate;

    Sammanfattning : In 2022, the world population reached 8 billion. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is the region in the world with the highest total fertility rate. As high fertility rates can be a threat to an inclusive and sustainable development in this region, it is of great importance to understand the determinants of fertility. LÄS MER
