    Sammanfattning : The dichotomous concepts of order and chaos represented by the mythological Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus, as outlined by Friedrich Nietzsche in his controversial 1872 book on dramatic theory, The Birth of Tragedy, will in this essay serve as the primary literary concepts utilized in a psychoanalysis of the main character and his struggles in the American realist novel The Age of Innocence published in 1920. The social tragedy at the center of the novel written by the now canonical author Edith Wharton pits the protagonist, Newland Archer, against his own morality, in a battle between duty and passion, and conflicting personality traits.     Sammanfattning : In the course of this thesis, decisive problematizations, in the Foucauldian sense, around Viktor Šklovskij’s early Russian Formalism shall be the object of re-problematizations. More precisely, a careful look will be taken at re-problematizations around theoretical aspects regarding Šklovskij’s paradigmatic reductionist model, primarily as it is introduced in his article Art as device (1917), described most notably by Aage Hansen-Löve and Wolf Schmid in Der Russische Formalismus (1978) and Slavische Erzähltheorie (2010), Elemente der Narratologie (2014) as well as Grundthemen der Literaturwissenschaft: Erzählen (2018) respectively.     Sammanfattning : This thesis explores Nietzsche’s presentation of both Socrates and Plato in his earliest work The Birth of Tragedy with no regard to personal letters or notes. It argues that Nietzsche had great knowledge of both these ancient philosophers and presents a very nuanced understanding of both of them through the picture of the dying Socrates from Plato’s dialogue Phaedo, not a caricature of any sort as has been generally argued for.
