  1. 1. Time budgets of dairy cows in cow-calf contact system with automatic milking

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Författare :Teresa Johansson; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Dairy cows; Time budget; AMS; Cow-calf contact;

    Sammanfattning : Time budgets of dairy cattle are useful to determine the amount of time the cows can allocate to all the behaviours throughout the day. In an automatic milking system (AMS), time budgets are of interest as the individuals are able to choose how to spend the majority of their time, besides the time in the milking robot, and can be used to ensure adequate amounts of time are spent on essential behaviours, such as lying and eating. 2. 2. Short and long-term effects on the teat tissue in a Cow Calf Contact system with automatic milking

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Författare :Johanna Lilja; [2021]
    Nyckelord :teat end callosity; hyperkeratosis; teat wall thickness; ultrasound; suckling; nursing;

    Sammanfattning : The interest in keeping calves with their lactating dams in dairy production is increasing, among both dairy farmers and consumers. This MSc thesis is a part of an ongoing project at the Swedish University of Agriculture (SLU) where a cow-calf contact system with automatic milking is studied. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Lying behaviour of lactating dairy cows in a cow-calf contact system

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Nyckelord :cow-calf contact system; dairy cattle; lying behaviour; welfare;

    Sammanfattning : Conventional dairy farming practices usually involve the early separation of calves from their dams. Cow-calf contact (CCC) systems may offer an alternative rearing solution that allows for the expression of natural behaviours, such as suckling and bonding. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effects of weaning and two separation strategies on cow-calf pairs kept together in an automatic milking system until calves were four months old

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management

    Författare :Kajsa Bruhn; [2021]
    Nyckelord :cow; calf; separation; weaning; vocalization; activity; stress;

    Sammanfattning : In the commercial dairy industry calves and cows are usually separated within 24 hours, however there is an increasing interest from the consumers to accommodate dairy cows and their calves together to improve animal welfare. Previous studies conclude that with later separation comes an increase in both calves and cows’ behavioral stress response after separation, however late separation has positive effects on the health and behavior of calves and cows. Författare :Sofia Gundersen; [2020]
    Nyckelord :cow-calf contact; dairy production; cow-calf separation; calf rearing system;

    Sammanfattning : The modern practice for dairy calf management is to separate the cow and calf a few hours after birth. That practice is highly debatable and consumers often oppose of it. There are several benefits for keeping cow and calf together for a longer period of time and letting the calf suckle. LÄS MER
