Based on theories of critical whiteness studies, intersectionality and (white) phenomenology, I conducted five semi-structured interviews with five white women about their understandings of their whiteness within a context of transnational travel. The recent surge in research concerning early Swedish working-class literature, including that which regards Maria Sandel (1870-1927), who’s pioneering role within the genre defines her as one of the most important early working-class authors in Sweden, is linked to the fact that the Swedish hegemonic whiteness that was established during the nineteenth and twentieth century is of certain interest. 5. Racial Representation in Swedish Children´s Picture Books : A Reflection of Hegemonic Whiteness
Master-uppsats, Malmö universitet/Institutionen för globala politiska studier (GPS)Sammanfattning : In this thesis, through critically analysing images and text in a selection of Swedish children's picture books, the aim is to investigate how white and non-white bodies are represented, and how racial differences between these white and non-white bodies are depicted and racial meanings addressed. Theoretical concepts from within the field of Critical race- and Whiteness studies are applied, to demonstrate how hegemonic whiteness and colour-blindness as discourse is prevalent in these children´s books, which is achieved by using non-white characters as tokens.
