By comparing AirOhMail with the failed start-up, SurPrise - both companies attempting to commercialize the same product - this paper demonstrates how a low-level innovation product can better achieve success in the start-up phase by avoiding patents and pursuing more entrepreneurial means of intellectual property protection.
