  1. 1. Searching for direct collapse black holes using the James Webb Space Telescope

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för fysik och astronomi

    Författare :Edison Arellano Almeida; [2022]
    Nyckelord :extragalactic astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : Recent detections of massive quasars at z > 6 has proven to be an interesting challengefor cosmology given the short time frame that these objects have to reach a certainmass via conventional methods (e.g., galaxy mergers). LÄS MER

  2. 2. AGN Candidates for High Energy Neutrino Emission in IceCube

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Högenergifysik

    Författare :Roisín O'Rourke Brogan; [2020]
    Nyckelord :active galactic nuclei; agn; high energy physics; neutrinos; IceCube; blazars; jets; gamma emission;

    Sammanfattning : Since the construction of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory was completed in 2010, many amazing discoveries have been made in the field of neutrino physics. Recently a neutrino event has been linked to an blazar-type active galactic nucleus source, bringing us one step closer to understanding the production of high-energy extragalactic neutrinos and ushering in a new era of multimessenger astronomy. 3. 3. Ultraluminous sources in X-ray sky surveys

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Högenergifysik

    Författare :Miquel Colom i Bernadich; [2020]
    Nyckelord :X-rays; X-ray astronomy; black holes; neutron stars; accretion physics; XMM-Newton; eROSITA;

    Sammanfattning : Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are extragalactic, non-nuclear, point-like X-ray sources whose luminosity supersedes that of the Eddington limit of an accreting stellar mass black hole (L> 10 ^ 39 erg / s). Most of them are powered by black holes and neutron stars undergoing genuine super-Eddington accretion, with a small handful of candidates being consistent with sub-Eddington accretion on an intermediate mass black hole. 4. 4. Do variations in the initial mass function affect galaxy evolution?

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; Lunds universitet/Institutionen för astronomi och teoretisk fysik - Genomgår omorganisation

    Författare :Mateo Prgomet; [2020]
    Nyckelord :galaxy; galaxy formation; galaxy evolution; feedback; star formation; ultra faint dwarf galaxy; initial mass function; variations; universe; redshift; hydrodynamics; cosmology; zoomed-in simulations Galaxy formation and evolution; galaxy feedback; stellar feedback; IMF variations; cosmological zoomed-in simulations; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : The initial mass function (IMF) describes the stellar mass distribution for a population of stars at birth. This parameter represents a topic of long standing discussion within astronomy due to its apparent insensitive nature to environmental conditions. However, in the last decade, significant evidence suggesting the contrary has been presented. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Investigating inner Galactic Bulge stars through the near infrared

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; Lunds universitet/Institutionen för astronomi och teoretisk fysik - Genomgår omorganisation

    Författare :Hung Shuo Su; [2017]
    Nyckelord :Bulge; Milky Way; Galactic Centre; infrared; spectroscopy; Physics and Astronomy;

    Sammanfattning : Context: The formation of the Galactic Bulge is a topic of active research. There are many scenarios based on observations and Galactic evolution models. The key properties which need to be well constrained observationally are the metallicity distributions of stars and the spatial metallicity gradients. LÄS MER
