  1. 1. Electrophysiological correlates of facial width-to-height ratio : An exploratory mass univariate study

    Magister-uppsats, Högskolan i Skövde/Institutionen för biovetenskap

    Författare :Oscar Magnusson; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Facial width-to-height ratio; emotional expression; mass univariate analysis; late positive potential; anger resemblance view;

    Sammanfattning : Facial width-to-height ratio (FWHR), a facial metric, has been purported to predict threatening behaviors. Men with higher FWHR are perceived as more threatening and exhibit more threatening behaviors. In the current exploratory study, the aim was to elucidate the underlying electrophysiological correlates of FWHR. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Social anxiety and threat perception : An event-related potential study

    Magister-uppsats, Högskolan i Skövde/Institutionen för biovetenskap

    Författare :Adithi Sutradhar; [2020]
    Nyckelord :Late positive potential; FWHR; social anxiety; threat perception;

    Sammanfattning : The late positive potential (LPP) is an event-related potential (ERP) component associated with increased affective processing which seems to strongly respond to threats and to be sensitive to emotional faces. Some studies indicate that the LPP is modulated by anxiety symptoms, while others fail to find support for these observations. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Visual Perception of the Facial Width-to-Height Ratio : Possible Influences of Angry Facial Expressions as Revealed by Event-Related Brain Potentials

    Magister-uppsats, Högskolan i Skövde/Institutionen för biovetenskap

    Författare :Madeleine Jones; [2019]
    Nyckelord :Facial Width-to-Height Ratio; Late Positive Potential; Facial Processing; Anger; Cognitive Neuroscience;

    Sammanfattning : The facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) is a measure of the cheekbone width divided by the height of the face from the upper lip to the brows. The metric is hypothesised to have evolved as an intra-sexual competition mechanism in males, where large fWHRs are thought to signal both threat and aggression. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Threatening Measures, at Face Value : Electrophysiology Indicating Confounds of the Facial Width-to-Height Ratio

    Kandidat-uppsats, Högskolan i Skövde/Institutionen för biovetenskap

    Författare :Carl Lindersson; [2019]
    Nyckelord :threat perception; evolutionary cues; fWHR; LPP; overgeneralisation hypothesis;

    Sammanfattning : Previous studies support that the relative width of the upper face (facial width-to-height ratio; fWHR) has evolved to signal threat, but these studies rely greatly on subjective facial ratings and measurements prone to confounds. The present study objectively quantifies threat perception to the magnitude of the observers’ electrophysiological reaction, specifically the event-related potential (ERP) called the late positive potential (LPP), and investigate if brow height and jaw width could have confounded previous fWHR studies.
