  1. 1. Navigating the Waves of Conservation: Spatiotemporal Patterns in Harbour Porpoise Strandings in Swedish Waters

    Kandidat-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för biologisk grundutbildning

    Författare :Vigge Ulfsson; [2024]
    Nyckelord :Strandings; spatiotemporal patterns; harbour porpoise;

    Sammanfattning : Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are the only cetacean residents found year-round in Swedish waters. Since in situ monitoring of cetaceans can be difficult, invasive and often costly, strandings can be used as a cost-effective alternative to continuously collect data on these elusive animals. 2. 2. Investigating the influence of the tidal regime on harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena distribution in Mount’s Bay, Cornwall

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Författare :Duncan Jones; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Geography; Geographical Information Systems; GIS; Habitat Modelling; Harbour Porpoise; MaxEnt; Tidal Processes; Conservation; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Investigating the influence of the tidal regime on harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena distribution in Mount’s Bay, Cornwall Abstract Unintentional by-catch in fishing gear is a significant cause of mortality of harbour porpoises in UK waters. Understanding the spatial distribution of harbour porpoises at fine scales and how this changes over time is essential when trying to understand where these lethal interactions might occur. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Making nets more acoustically visible : Floats as passive mitigation measures to reduce bycatch of harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) in gillnets

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Författare :Frida Rosshagen; [2023]
    Nyckelord :toothed whales; harbour porpoise; Phocoena phocoena; incidental capture; bycatch; fisheries; fishing gear; ; gillnet; mitigation; reduction; low-cost; passive acoustic reflector; float;

    Sammanfattning : Incidental capture in fishing gear is today affecting at least 112 marine mammal species worldwide and for many smaller toothed whale species (Odontocete), gillnets are considered to be the largest problem. Although some effective mitigation measures exists, these are often context specific and many might be hard to implement due to reasons such as high costs and maintenance. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Protecting the proper Baltic harbour porpoise : An evaluation of Sweden’s conservation plan

    Kandidat-uppsats, Malmö universitet/Institutionen för Urbana Studier (US)

    Författare :Isabelle Faringstam; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Conservation; Evaluation; Rationality; Efficiency; Harbour porpoise; Sweden; Artbevarande; Utvärdering; Rationalitet; Effektivitet; Tumlare; Sverige;

    Sammanfattning : More than a third of the earths marine mammal species are threatened. This study aims to analyze and evaluate the conservation of the proper Baltic harbour porpoisein Sweden. The population is estimated to consist of only 500 individuals and are likely to be extinct if measures are not taken. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Do potentially seal-safe pingers deter harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in the vicinity of gillnets and thereby reduce bycatch?

    Master-uppsats, Linköpings universitet/Biologi

    Författare :Simon Björklund Aksoy; [2020]
    Nyckelord :Acoustic Deterrent Device; Banana pinger; Bycatch; Commercial fishery; C-POD; Dinner-bells; Future Oceans pinger; Harbour porpoise;

    Sammanfattning : Incidental bycatch in gillnets is a substantial threat to small cetaceans. Using Acoustic Deterrent Devices, “pingers”, have successfully reduced bycatch of harbour porpoises in gillnets. LÄS MER
