    Sammanfattning : This is a study of how the Spanish phrase mala vida is used in a historical corpus, the Corpus diacrónico de la academia Española, and an attempt to find out the meaning of this enigmatic phrase, based upon its patterns of use in this particular context. Furthermore, the study investigates mala vida as an attribute, in a particular serie of phrases that refer to people (hombres de mala vida, mujeres de mala vida, gente de mala vida), in the same corpus, in order to find out whom they refer to.     Sammanfattning : This work concerns the polyfunctionality and grammaticalization of an item bule in the under described Tanzanian Bantu languages, Kutu, Kwere, and Zalamo. Through collection and analysis of field data, it is shown that the original adverbial element bule ‘for free, in vain, for no reason’ has developed a wide range of functions within the domain of non-standard negation. Being able to accommodate variation within natural language increases the robustness of NLP models and their usefulness in real-life applications; simultaneously, detecting and describing variation and trends that govern it is one of the main goals of sociolinguistics and historical linguistics, meaning that some of the advances in NLP can contribute to these fields as well.
