    Sammanfattning : This essay examines hierarchical structures in two versions of Jules Vernes’ Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870). A full translation by Erik Carlquist is compared with a retelling of the story by Peter Gotthardt (2010), and the comparison is intended to show similarities and differences in the hierarchical structures that can be found in the two versions.     Sammanfattning : This study examines the strategies used in the translation from French to Swedish of an academic text written in the Central African Republic. It focuses on the two opposing translation strategies of domestication and foreignization as described by Venuti (2017) and investigates whether Venuti’s theory about foreignization as a way of resisting racism and imperialism is applicable to translations beyond the literary field. Edward Said's concept of Orientalism and Gayatri Spivak's analyses of Bertha Mason, the fictional representation of the colonial female subject in nineteenth-century English literature, tie up the similarities in how the Reservation and Linda are portrayed within the book.
